Why is it okay to say ‘darn’ and ‘heck’, when really, they mean the same thing as their ‘bad’ counterparts?

And even better, why is it okay to say ‘fudge’ instead of…you know.
Just to let you know, there isn’t a god.

It’s not, but people are too attached to their social taboos.

  2. PC User says:

it’s a cultural expression of words, nothing more

and think about it, it all comes down to meaning, but words are just words you know? Some think of it that way, i envy them for understanding it

  3. Meow. says:

    Hell, I don’t give a damn!

A word is not bad in itself; it depends on how you use it. Darn and heck are used in place of bad words, but they mean the same thing, so are basically bad words also.

  4. Cakes the Heathen says:

Why is it okay to say “butt” when it means another bad word?

    What about “sex”?

    “Poop?”

“Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”

    Ephesians 5:4

  6. Nick C says:

Fuck that. There’s nothing wrong with saying “damn,” “shit” or “hell” as they’re just words and have lost their originally-offensive meanings by becoming part of everyday language.

  7. Hail Naw! says:

I think it’s always better to say those above words, because it shows that you are making an effort not to use vulgar language.

But, honestly, it drives me nuts to hear ” H- E- DOUBLE L HOCKEY STICKS.

I think, “just say it please, and forget the cheese”. lol

Edit: ” Oh Holy fish sticks! ” LOL

My favorite is “bi-otch” I was called that once and about died laughing.

  8. TheLordsMaiden says:

They are usually not said under the same intention of anger. They actually lessen the force of the anger since they are not as derogatory as the other words. (Thats the way I see it at least)

  9. guraqt2me says:

It all boils down to the intent of the heart, which God can only judge righteously ! Christianity is who you ARE – not what you do (or don’t do) ! It’s about relationship not about “do’s & don’ts” (that was tried in the former or Old Covenant with the Jews – then, came Jesus to show us a better way).

    P.S. “Oakley – Doakley” – Ned Flanders

I’m in full agreement with you. I think human nature(unfortunately) is to get as close to the line as possible. In jest, the FCC can’t fine you for those “lighter” words. The point, of course, is the attitude communicated with those or any substitute words.

  11. Cee T says:

I know Christians who won’t say darn or heck. I like “dang” myself.

  12. Kalista <3's MSI says:

The real question is why we create words then ban them.

    “freak” is better than “fudge”
    “Dang” is better than “darn”

  13. Sincerely says:

It is something that is accepted and people know that you have good intentions like I will say “Oh My Goodness” instead of using God’s name vainly

  14. sibylspider says:

LOL – we got in trouble for saying “darn” when we were kids. Apparently we said it too much in an effort to not actually swear. But I think that’s ridiculous. There’s nothing wrong with darn, and I personally don’t have a problem with damn, either.

Heck is a place for people who don’t believe in Gosh.

There’s nothing wrong with fudge – it’s a yummy chocolate treat. While we’re at it, why don’t we all just get offended at the letter “F”?

  15. karma_slave says:

Because people think that it’s ok to cover something up with a completely ridiculous and absurd mask, when it really just means the same shit.

  16. Venom says:

Well, technically it’s not. But nowadays people consider it okay since it is “better” then the actual word or words. It’s slang but really it isn’t any better.

  17. Nelena & Jaylor luver says:

I dont think its very nesssary but its not as bad as saying there words they came from. you are giving an effort not to say them because God gave us those words not to say for a reason. And yes there really is a god and you would know by reading the Bible :) but when you say the words that came from the real swear words, its still taking advantage of God because I believe that its still a sin to God for you to say almost copies of the swear words he gave us not to say. So I truley cant say. Thats a question you will have to ask Jesus or God someday in Heaven :)
