Computer Obedience Training

Obedience: the act or practice of obeying; dutiful or submissive compliance. Training, from Wikipedia.  The term training refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies.

Don’t we all feel like the computer needs some more training or at least a good whack when the darn thing is not doing what we the operator knows it can or when we want the computer to do something more. I write this in fits of chuckles because for weeks I was whacking my computer because the darn thing was not doing something so simple. I was trying to make a lens on Squidoo and it kept telling me the topic was spam. In fact I was downright pissed off for weeks about this one aspect. So I just did not make any lenses. Knowing that a good Squidoo lens is a great way to generate free traffic and the search engines love the fresh new content, it was a bit frustrating.

I will be the first to admit I am a bit impatient when it comes to waiting on the computer to do something like loading pages or process something even though I might have 20 windows open. I typically use Google Chrome because it loads fast, holds passwords and keeps my top eight used sites open plus five recently closed. So Chrome works great for me most of the time. Problem is according to my computer geek friends (said with love and affection) Chrome is not using the standard format for web pages and Mozilla is the standard, whatever that means. But there is a lesion or two to be learned from this.

First and foremost most computer obedience training just like dog training or spouse training is a symbiotic kinda thing. You can learn from each other or you can fight each other trying to do it your way. Take a step back, take a breath or two and ask yourself what the other needs. Most of the time the other is telling you what it needs your job is to learn to read it / understand it / clue into to what the other is asking for then provide it. Life moves on and everyone is happy.

Second there is more than one way to get to the end goal. Whatever that goal is there are thousands of ways to get to the end goal. Some just are more direct than others. So when you run in to a dead end make a 90 degree turn and come back around to the goal and you’ll get there.

Oh ya and don’t try to make a lens on Squidoo about home business topics with Google Chrome. Squidoo thinks its spam. Funny thing is Firefox and Explorer will build same topic no problem. Same can be said for a spreadsheet from Gmail. If you’re using Chrome that spreadsheet will not convert into an Excel file but if you’re using Explorer or Firefox it will.

Fits of chuckles because I have watched my computer geek friends whacking their computer or mine when fixing it only to see them over look a simple issue. First day in home based business or 10 years into it there are going to be those days that the computer needs some more obedience training so give it a whack and walk away to a nice lunch or walk and then come back and ask yourself what it needs then use your knowledge and skills slightly different to bring your computer into submissive compliance. And you too will have fits of chuckles plus have your task done.
